We saw a rare performance by Brothomstates at Ghent Sessions 2005, he performed the Rakim remix.
I have to disagree (with wheezer), the track under Rakim's rap is wicked. It sure sounds like a Brothomstates track and its slammin - with hints of BC style chords, tough beats that vary between 4/4 to some more varied broken style, this ain't your average tech-house track. Mix this in the context of stuff like the later Arcola releases, LFO's "Freak" or the first track off the Milanese LP on WARP, and this really makes sense. And the timestretching to get the vocal up from the original 103bpm to nearly 130bpm on here is very high quality, not what your average DJ would have on his CD decks methinks. The Prince track on the other side is also slammin, the kinda style that would fit right into a set with Daft Punk, older Basement Jaxx, all that funky stuff! One more thing, on the label of this tune, stamped below the "ARC000" is a WARP logo that only shows up in UV light - when it glows yellow! check it.
Coming from the Warp camp, I consider this release nothing short of a slap in the face. I'm well used to tracks that take the acapella of some hiphop track and add beats and extra production, and I don't consider this practice to be inherently bad. However, in this case nothing was done except taking Rakim's vocals off of "I Know You Got Soul" and adding a very basic minimal beat underneath. The production on this is really boring, a skilled DJ can achieve a much better effect by taking the actual acapella and mixing it with a good minimal house/techno track in his set than employing this stinker. Most importantly, I fail to comprehend how Warp chose to publish this thing, even as the limited semi-bootleg job it turned out to be - this is a label supposedly reknown for its creativity and originality, not for its hiphop ripoffs!
