Overall, I agree with most people about the mastering. Could be a bit more dynamic, but compared to the digital download that came with it, this pressing is still head over heals what that is. But the pressing itself hasn't given me any issues with excessive inner groove distortion, overblown saturation, surface noise or anything along those lines. It's a pretty well executed pressing. It's an excellent album, a pressing worth the price of admission over the CD and a great aesthetic. Maybe I was lucky with my particular copy. This is going to give people a heart attack, but I like digitally sourced LP's. Give me a well done digitally sourced record any day over an all analog one, as long as the master is amazing. What comes out of the interface and onto the lacquer is analog as it is, without the drawbacks of an increased noise floor, deterioration over time and inconsistencies in playback (At least when it comes to the master recording). That means that when the stampers used for pressing your albums need to be replaced, you can be assured you'll get the same great sound quality that you got with the first run of pressings.
This is just not reality. A digital file pressed to vinyl is better than analog? Perhaps you should research how digital and analog information actually work. Short version, a digital source can never, repeat never, by it's very nature, ever, hold the information that an analog source can and does. I am not saying a digitally sourced vinyl pressing can't sound, ok, however, scientifically, an analog source will sound better, than the digital everytime.
I’m pretty disappointed in this pressing and after reviewing the comments, I see I’m not alone. There is no range and the album distorts at times. The beauty of this album is completely overshadowed with this pressing.
Rose Of Winds
Okay. I was just reading all comments about this pressing and I have now some background to talk about it.My advice is: Change to a flat-sounding cartridge and check how better it sounds. Come on, is it still digital? Yes. But sounds much better.I used to play on my 1978 Shure M44G and exchanged to my Nagaoka MP-11. What a difference!Try it!
it definitely suffers from a digital sourcing. it's loud; lacks a rich full dynamic and leaves the listener walking away with a veiled experience. is it fatiguing. no. would i have purchased knowing it was pressed from a digital source? no
Just here to confirm for whoever missed the news that that this album was sourced digitally by the band before going to RCA. Yes, Painted Ruins is compressed to a noticeable level but I have heard way worse mixes from good bands (points to the very recent Trash Generator by Tera Melos). In an interview, Chris Taylor mentioned they recorded the entire record in their home-studios before bringing it to potential labels. While I can understand how this was a practical and cheaper method to make the album, I for one was a little let down when I learned this. Once I listened to the album, however, I realized the mix itself and mastering are very well done. Even for a digitally sourced record, the shimmering, calculated beauty of Grizzly Bear's sound can be heard especially if your setup can give extra life to the mix.
very nice pressing indeed! no crackle or pops or hiss or non fill issues. wish all modern vinyl would be pressed like this. album itself is very beautiful and - along with the new fleet foxes and war on drugs - my top 3 record of 2017 so far. only complain I have is the mastering: even on lp "painted ruins" sounds very loud and digital to me, missing details and dynamic range. I know most people these days listen to music via shitty equipment, but come on! a bit more audiophile would do no harm.

I didn't receive my vinyl yet but I'm really concerned since the digital source sounds VERY compressed to me. Any thoughts?
The Vinyl sounds amazing. Doesn't sounds overly compressed to me.
Fantastic pressing, but unfortunately the music was not recorded to tape like previous records and is very hot/loud. With this kind of loudness, details cannot be heard and is fatiguing to listen to all the way through. The Cd is bad too, but there is a 320 MP3 out there that is a tad less dynamic but proper.
Clean pressing, leaps and bounds beyond the norm these days.
Vinyl sounds pretty solid. For those who care: it also has been clean, free of defect and flat.

Is the download MP3 only or are there options for WAV/lossless?
only mp3, sadly. wish more records would come with wav downloads, as they are aimed for the audiophile crowd anyhow.
how's pressing sound? Wonder if GB actually cared to do a good pressing on black vinyl after bashing colored vinyl.
GB bashed colored vinyl? I heard the gold shields press wasn't great, but I don't remember hearing anything about them being against colored pressings.
my pressing sounds superb. flat, dynamic, silent, crackle- and pop free. wish all modern day vinyl would sound like this.
Still trying to figure out what I think in terms of production and mastering. Fair to say it sounds as good as anything they've released on vinyl so far. In terms of pressing it's almost flawless. Just finished disc 1 and it was completely noise free!
Mine is arriving tomorrow, I will update once I listen to it. To be fair, the golden shields release got a lot of heat I just wish they hadn't turned away from special colored vinyl and tried a different manufacturer instead. Their past black presses sound really good, shields being the best sounding black first press imo so I have high expectations, even if it is their first release on RCA.
