Top release IMHO great atmospheres and tuff beats! Intense were a quality act, pretty much all they made spanning Hardcore Jungle Drum'n'bass is gold!! I was lucky to see them live @ Lazerdrome early 90's and that too was awesome ...Legends!

INTENSE, best known for their unforgettable jazzsteppin' period, haven't been so lucky when paying homage to their darker roots.
It often resulted in very weak releases such as "Black ice" for instance, not to mention the big failure of "Destruction".
So you can take special care of this single because it's nothing but THE exception !!!!!!!
And what a stunning one !!!

On "Visions", the most thrilling and immediate shock of the two, a drum pattern starts off for a while till overtaken by a spectral melody of long shrill notes quickly reinforced by a sustained chord, cold and distant.
After some ominous stompin', the full rhythm enters, complex and evocative of a real drummer, in the good old INTENSE manner.
The first mood of sonic ghosts returns but further, after a pure bass and drums episod, things subtly change as the main gloomy melody comes back modulated and soon then surrounded by eerie tincklings whose echoes lead to the break.
At that point the sonic space is filled with new spectral frequencies, weird, undefinable, somewhere between fear and serenity, dangerously mesmerizing the listener while the drums burst again...close to an imminent disaster !!!!!
Rather the back and forth visions of a nightmare than sweet dreams...for sure !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"First contact" offers a more open atmosphere although very dark too. The structure is quite the same, using an haunting chorus line as main element above ostinato beats.
There is also some key in the break that sounds a bit "vintage" by now but its effect is ok and still does good. The general impression is of a mystical deploration on a cosmic scale.

Essential INTENSE work, clever and full of strong feelings.
