Magical Mix... There seems to be a track missing from the tracklist between the 18th and 19th... Obviously one of the coolest and most obscure cuts!
Track 2.8 is also incorrectly listed. Its not "X-102 – Intro (X-102)" its actually "X-102 - Iapetus"(do I win the internet?)
just been watching the set on vid aswell (youtube) fuckin lethal...proper dj'ing wouldve loved to see him and the producer B2B in the mid nineties, 1 of the only hardcore sometimes techno djs in his class for this sorta live thing at that time IMO...that would be some fuckin mash upthe liquid room vid plays in 2 pts for 20 mins or so absolute raw mixage at it's best wicked forever
Classic Mills. He was asked by the editing guys if he wanted the bumps and glitches taking out and the whole mix cleaned up - Jeff said 'no leave it exactly like it is' Cool
This was the first mix cd I listened to in my life in the Australian summer of 98 before I saw Mills for the first time at Hardware 14 and it is still very special to me. I know every part and every mix as if it were my own. It literally changed my life and launched me into the dance music scene. But it's kind of like doing your first scuba dive in Tahiti (which I did); everything else afterwards is a disappointment. If you like Techno and haven't listened to this before then you know nothing about Techno.
I found it again! Now I have the risk to be completelly repetitive and ridiculously exagerated, BUT I must say this is the best all time live mix recording of the Electronic Era (until now)...Eternal life to Jeff Mills...
Yes, there are flaws in these mixes but who cares! It even adds to his ever so organic relentless super creative style. This is a mile stone CD to say the least with unforgettable moments when Jeff Mills was rising above everybodyelse basically and surely his performance was one of the most exciting thing to experience in the electronic music scene. Enough said.
This is, simply put, my all time favorite mix CD. I haven't heard anything like it released professionally before or since. It's a special gem in this era when most "mix CD's" are really just digital compilations. And we wonder why people don't think it's real music... I can see why some might not care for it. There are a couple of very minor technical glitches. But what do you expect when the record's being cut every 30-60 seconds in a massive flurry of manic energy? This is what DJing is all about... not just smoothly fading one record into the other, but really creating something new. Jeff has said that most techno records aren't interesting for more than a minute or so anyway; I think he's right. He's giving you his own personal interpretation of the music instead of just being another generic surgical beatmatcher. Track selection is slightly dated, but still wicked. Best moment on the disc: when Jeff mixes drops the bassline from DJ Funk's "Run" over the dry 909 kick on Funk's ghetto-house "Work that Body" after the latter has only been playing for 20 seconds or so.
People argue about this mix. Sloppy mixing and relentless energy permeate this mix. For those of you who can understand what is being laid out here, this is an important milestone in techno. This mix will still hold up today and probably for a long time to come. It's hard to put a finger on exectly why this is so good, but the creative energy of the mixer, Jeff Mills, really comes out in full force. The typical standards have been thrown out the window here and in their place we hear techno music being used as something very few people give it credit for. What is that something? We may never know, yet we cannot deny what we feel when we hear.
Mitars Riders
This CD demonstrates why Jeff Mills is rightly considered one of the best DJ's around. Great intro, amazing selection of trcks (inc some classics) and aggressive mixing...having said all thatI always found his early to mid 90's sets frustrating as just as you got into the record he'd switch the trck !!
Surely the best techno set has ever been released. Jeff proves that when you are the best dj, you should create music from music, not just playing records without passion and imagination.
this is the quintesential jeff mills mix if not the quintesential detroit techno mix. constant, banging energy... relentless, layered and textured. i find myself laughing hysterically right about the time he drops the first taste of Strings of Life... after that its pure manic body-jacking of the most sublime variety.
